Slowing Down our Relationship to Time: Quality over Quantity

In a few hours, we’ll be springing forward into Daylight Savings Time in the US. And it occurs to me there are many ways in which we are conditioned into an adversarial relationship with time, in most cases, wanting to speed it it up:

• “Can't wait for this [day/week/year] to be over.”

• Planning ahead for next quarter, year, 5-10 years. • "Are we there yet?"

What's important to remember though, is that our time here, in these mortal forms, is finite, and not guaranteed for any amount of time. (This past year in the COVID era has been all too tragic of a reminder of this reality.)

Most of us, whether aware of it or not, are operating from a "scarcity mindset" when it comes to time (among other things). As in, since it's limited, we must try to do and fast forward through as much of it as possible. So carpe diem, and live each day as it may be your last.

But what if, we were able to do so, while also shifting into an abundance mindset? Yes, our time here is limited, but that, paradoxically is also why we need to be willing to slow down and focus on the quality of our time, not just the quantity of it and the things we do with it. That which is precious and in limited supply is meant to be savored. Rather than focusing on the quantity of things that we are doing with the quantity of time we have left, what if we focused on the quality of time we are spending and the quality of our being in relationship to it and the world around us?

This year of pandemic mode has been one of great hustle and chaos for many (myself, included). And yet, as eager as I am to fast forward to a time when the pandemic will be a distant memory instead of the top headline, I also know that it will take time, so til then, doing what I can to slow down, and savor what is right here: the challenges, the opportunities, the possibilities for learning, growth, adaptation and evolution, for seeing the world in a different light, as fully engaged as possible, simply grateful for my continued existence here, a luxury which >2.65M of my fellow global citizens no longer have.

I'm humbly slowing down before intentionally springing forward. Will you join me?
